Siem Reap, Cambodia

Our flight to Cambodia is at 6am the next morning. It's an international flight, which means we need to be at the airport at 4am. Our current hostel is 45minutes from the airport. We would have to leave at 3am to make it to the airport to catch our flight. There is another hostel that is a 5min walk from the airport. This hostel is $14/night and we deemed that way too expensive (I haven't spent more than $11 for a hostel here) for just a few hours of sleep. So Laura, Grant (US), and I decided we would just sleep in the airport. What a great idea! Just like everything else that deals with us and Phuket...it started out fun and quickly turned not fun.

We started by buying basically all the beer from 711 (which wasn't a lot, I promise) and sat around in a corner on the floor and hungout for several hours. Then it was midnight and we were tired. Then I had to attempt to sleep on my backpack/the airport floor. At this point I realized that sleeping in airports is not fun and that paying $14 for half a nights sleep would have been worth it. At 3am we could finally check in and we sleepily made our way to our gate. I passed out for the one hour flight.

By the time we got to the hostel we were dead tired and also probably gross because we hadn't showered in 24hours and just "slept" on the airport floor. We couldn't check in yet so we all slept by the pool until 2pm when we could FINALLY check in. We spent the rest of the day napping. It was not a successful day.

Day 2:

Today was successful! We are in Siem Reap which is home of Angkor Wat and all of the Angkor Temples. Laura and I woke up at 4am and hired a Tuk Tuk driver to take us to the main temples and at 4:30am we were off. We went to the main temple, Angkor Wat, for sunrise.

Next was Bayon, which was really cool. There were faces built into the temples and monkeys were climbing around everywhere.

Finally, we went to Ta Prohm which is where Tomb Raider was filmed. That one was really cool because all of these old trees were grown over the temple. The thing that is really crazy about that is when you think how old the trees are and the fact that the trees came after the temple. It really put into perspective how old the temples were.

I am also extremely ashamed to admit I know no history about the Angkor Wat temples. Dad/James please tell me about them.

We stopped at a few other temples as well but they were much smaller and I don't know what they were called. There are ~23598347598 temples in Cambodia. After our morning of exploring about 5 we were pretty templed out. We relaxed the rest of the day and ate, which has been a pattern for Cambodia so far. In Siem Reap, other than the temples, there really isn't much to do during the day. At night there's a big night market, a circus, and pub street.

Tomorrow we are headed to Battambang, Cambodia!
