What to Pack on an African Safari: A Guide

So you're going on an African safari! This trip is sure to be a dream, but you may be asking yourself: what do you pack on an African safari? Africa is a vast and diverse continent. Depending on which country you are visiting and what time of year it will be, the weather will vary. However, no matter where you are, the days are known to be hot and dusty while the mornings and nights can be chilly. While you should always double check the weather prior to your trip, this list is a great starting point for any African safari trip. From clothes to accessories, we have all the necessities listed below.

Think light-weight, earthy tones that are good for layering.

2 TANK TOPS

Again, light-weight, earthy tones, good for layering and also good for when it gets extra warm.

1 LONG SLEEVE SUN SHIRT

These shirts are great for layering on chilly mornings and help block the sun during the mid-day heat.

1 FLEECE

A necessity for the chilly sunrise game drives and relaxing at the lodge in the evenings.

2 SHORTS

The days definitely get hot, pack a pair of shorts that are comfortable to wear in the Jeep all day.

1 LONG LIGHT WEIGHT PANTS

Light-weight cotton or linen pants are great for both the chilly and warm parts of safari. Find a pair that are breathable and comfortable.

1 PAIR CLOSED TOE SHOES

Safaris can be very dusty. There are many times where you will get out of the Jeep to stop for lunch, go to the bathroom, etc. and having closed toe shoes helps you stay a bit cleaner and more stable in the terrain. We personally LOVE On Cloud sneakers—they're easy to take on and off, supportive, and come in a variety of colors.Note: Some safari drivers would rather you not stand on the seats with your shoes on, so consider packing a pair that are easy to take off and on easily.

1 PAIR SANDALS

Pack a pair of sandals to wear at dinner, on game drives, or by the pool. Be sure they are comfortable and easy to get off and on.

1 SWIM SUIT

Many of the safari lodges and camps have a pool. Be sure to pack your swim suit so you can jump in and refresh after a long day of spotting safari animals!

Accessories on Safari

SCARF/BANDANA

A scarf is a great accessory for any trip. Use it as a shawl when it gets cold, block yourself from the sun when you've had to much, or just use it as an accessory to your outfit.

BINOCULARS

One mistake our family made was not packing enough binoculars. Each person should have their own set of binoculars while on a game drive. Many times the animals are pretty far away and if you have to share a pair you could miss out on the action! We especially love Vortex brand binoculars as they have a spectacular warranty.

SUNGLASSES

Not only can the sun be strong on a safari, but it also gets dusty. While you're driving around looking for animals, dirt starts flying around and can get into your eyes. Wearing sunglasses protects your eyes from both the bright sun and the dirt!

BOOK/e-reader

It's always nice to pack a book on any trip. You'll be surprised how exhausted you are at the end of the day, curling up with a book by the fire is the perfect way to relax.

CAMERA

This should go without saying—of course you'll want to capture a million pictures from your safari! If possible, pack a camera with a good zoom lens, as many of the animals will be farther away. We're currently loving the Sony Alpha series—there are a variety of cameras for both beginner and those more advanced with photography.

PORTABLE CHARGER

If you plan on taking a lot of pictures with your phone, your battery may die. Take the stress away by packing a portable charger so you can charge on the go. This SOXONO charger is our current favorite—delivering up to 7 chargers for an iPhone and has a built in solar panel.

EXTRA MEMORY CARD

You'll be surprised by how many pictures you can take in such a short amount of time while on a game drive. Be prepared and pack an extra memory card—just in case!

FACE WIPES

As I said before, safaris can be dusty. Packing face wipes are an easy way to feel refreshed and get some of the safari dust off your face and arms!

SUNSCREEN

The safari sun is no joke! You make think you're safe, since you're riding around in a Jeep all day with a nice breeze, but the sun will still get you. Be extra careful of your face, neck, and arms.

HAND SANITIZER

Often times on safari, you stop and have a picnic lunch. There may or may not be a bathroom and if there is a bathroom, there may or may not be a sink! Packing hand sanitizer is a good back up to staying germ free.

BUG SPRAY

Depending on where you're going on safari, mosquitos may or may not be an issue. Just in case, it's good to have bug spray on hand. We personally love LA Fresh bug spray wipes for travel as it won't count towards your liquids. Also, be sure to check whether or not you will be in a malaria area, as you may need malaria pills as well.
